How rounding works when combining tasks

When combining tasks, the marks are used as entered. However, some schools may want to round the marks before they are combined and only use these rounded marks. If that is the case at your school, you will need to turn on the setting “MARKBOOKv2_COMBINE_ROUNDED”.

When marks are combined, if a student has missed one of the component tasks, then the other tasks will be prorata adjusted to compensate for the missing mark. The student is effectively given a Z-Score estimate for that missing task in the combination process. If you do not want this to happen and want an estimate other than a z-score based estimate, then you will need to enter an estimate of the missed task before you combine the tasks. Most of the time, you would just be able to leave this missed task blank.

When combining marks, you should also note that the component tasks are pre-scaled to the method you specify, and then added together according to the weight of each task. Finally, the combined result is recombined using the scaling parameters that you have specified. So, if you have combined tasks to a new average of 60 and a new standard deviation of 10, then each component task would be scaled using this method first, and then added together before rescaling the result. This process is done to remove unintentional skew as a result of variations in how the component tasks were spread. If you chose a combine method that does not adjust the spread of marks (eg ‘out of’), then the component tasks are effectively not pre-scaled.
